Lung cancer ranks among the deadliest cancers globally, beginning in the lungs and affecting people of all backgrounds.

In Indonesia, lung cancer cases are frequently linked to smoking. Both active smokers and individuals exposed to secondhand smoke are at higher risk of developing this cancer.

Early Signs of Lung Cancer That Are Commonly Overlooked

Lung cancer is often detected in advanced stages since early symptoms are frequently dismissed or mistaken for less serious health issues. However, early detection significantly improves the chances of effective treatment.

Therefore, recognizing lung cancer symptoms is crucial for prompt testing and treatment. Here are some warning signs that should not be ignored:

Persistent Cough

A chronic cough is one of the primary symptoms of lung cancer, yet it is often attributed to common respiratory issues, such as colds or bronchitis.

Be vigilant if you have a dry or phlegm-producing cough lasting over 2-3 weeks, especially if it’s accompanied by blood. A history of smoking, chronic cough, or prolonged exposure to air pollution are risk factors that can compromise lung health.

Unexplained Shortness of Breath

Unexpected shortness of breath without strenuous activity can signal lung cancer. This symptom is often overlooked as a result of allergies, fatigue, or pollution exposure. However, as lung cancer progresses, tumors may obstruct airways or cause fluid buildup in the lungs, making it harder to breathe.

Chest or Shoulder Pain

Although chest pain isn’t exclusive to lung issues, it can be a symptom of lung cancer when caused by a tumor pressing against nerves or inflammation of the lung lining.

Consult a doctor if you have persistent chest pain or if it worsens with deep breaths.

Changes in Voice

Hoarseness isn’t always due to coughing or throat irritation. Persistent hoarseness lasting more than two weeks could indicate vocal cord issues that may be related to lung cancer.

Unexplained Weight Loss

Significant, unintentional weight loss without any changes in diet or activity level can signal serious health issues, including lung cancer.

Cancer cells may increase calorie burning, altering metabolism and leading to rapid weight loss.

Persistent Fatigue

Constant and unexplained fatigue may also indicate lung cancer. This can occur as the body diverts energy to combat the tumor, leaving you feeling drained.

Frequent Respiratory Infections

Recurrent infections like bronchitis or pneumonia can point to lung cancer. When a tumor blocks the airways, it makes the lungs more susceptible to infections, so it is important to be aware of these symptoms.

If lung infections persist despite regular treatment, further testing may be necessary.

If you experience persistent cough or any of the above symptoms, consult a doctor right away. You can also use the Ai Care app for health consultations, available on the App Store and Play Store.
